Over the past five years, since relocating to the City of Glendale, my artistic practice has centered on community connection, cultural memory, and storytelling through public-facing art. Moving here meant leaving my home country, and that sense of distance has made engagement with Armenian communities deeply important to both my personal life and my creative work. Glendale’s strong Armenian presence has offered me a meaningful space to reconnect with heritage, history, and shared resilience through art.

During this time, I have completed several community-based projects that strengthened my relationship with the Armenian community in Los Angeles. One such project was a mural created for an Armenian kindergarten, which, while not centered on a specific cultural theme, served as my first mural experience in Glendale and became an important point of connection with the local Armenian community, fostering relationships with children, families, and educators. Another significant project was a large-scale family tree installation created for an art studio, developed in close dialogue with community members. The family tree project was especially impactful, as it responded directly to the collective struggles experienced by Armenians following the 2020 war in Artsakh. The artwork centered on the historic tree known as Tnjri, located in Artsakh. According to history and legend, Tnjri was planted during the time of Tigran the Great and is said to be the only tree of its kind still standing. It is believed that an Armenian general once saved his troops by hiding them inside the tree, and that a natural fountain exists within it. Today, Tnjri symbolizes endurance, protection, and hope. The artworkserved as both a memorial and a prayer—that amid ongoing challenges, this tree, like the Armenian people, will continue to stand and protect future generations.

I am deeply interested in developing a public art proposal for the City of Glendale because I believe public art has the power to honor shared histories, foster dialogue, and create spaces of reflection and belonging. Glendale’s diverse and culturally rich community offers a unique opportunity to create artwork that is both locally grounded and universally resonant. Through thoughtful collaboration and research-driven design, I aim to contribute a public artwork that positively impacts the city by celebrating resilience, preserving memory, and strengthening community connection.

My background in environmental design, visual merchandising, and spatial storytelling equips me to think beyond the mural as an isolated artwork and instead consider how it interacts with its surroundings and the people who move through the space daily. I bring a strong understanding of composition, color theory, and scale, which helps ensure the mural feels cohesive, impactful, and accessible from multiple viewpoints. I’m especially attentive to how visual elements guide the eye, create rhythm, and invite engagement — all essential for a successful public-facing piece.

Collaboration is central to my work. I’m experienced in working within teams and translating collective ideas into a unified visual language, while honoring diverse voices and perspectives. I can contribute both creatively and logistically — from concept development and sketching to refining visual systems that keep the project aligned, organized, and community-informed throughout its execution.

Most importantly, I see community murals as a form of service. My goal is to help create a piece that not only enhances the physical space but also reflects the identity, resilience, and stories of the people it represents. By combining my design expertise, collaborative approach, and commitment to thoughtful visual storytelling, I hope to contribute to a mural that feels rooted, inclusive, and lasting — something the community can take pride in and feel connected to long after it’s completed.

Through a collective mural, I want to contribute something that not only enhances the aesthetic of our city but also reflects the vibrancy, diversity, and resilience of the people who live here. I see this work as an act of service — a way to honor community stories, invite engagement, and leave a lasting, positive impact on the places and people that make this neighborhood meaningful.

My name is Anna Arzumanian, and I am an artist and educator whose practice is rooted in drawing, design, and a lifelong commitment to visual expression. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design with a concentration in Drawing, graduating with honors, from California State University, Northridge. There I developed a strong technical foundation and a disciplined approach to creations. My academic experience was formative, allowing me to explore drawing not only as a representational tool but as a language to convey emotion, narratives, and new concepts.

During my time at CSUN, I was particularly drawn to drawing as a medium of expression and immediacy. I began with small-scale works that required careful attention to detail and precision, using scale as a way to study form, gesture, and line. Over time, my practice naturally expanded in size and ambition. As my confidence grew, I intentionally pushed my work into larger-scale pieces, allowing physical movement, emotional presence, and personal expression to play a more central role in the creative process. Working at a larger scale challenged me to think differently about composition, space, and viewer interaction, and it became a vital method for translating internal experiences into outward, visual form. This progression marked a turning point in my artistic voice, enabling me to communicate more openly and powerfully through my work.

My artistic development was recognized through my inclusion in the Fresh Art 2024 exhibition, an experience that affirmed my commitment to pursuing art as a professional practice. Exhibiting my work alongside other emerging artists strengthened my understanding of presentation,

dialogue, and audience engagement. It also reinforced my belief in art as a shared experience, one that exists not only within gallery walls but within the broader cultural landscape.

Since that time, I have continued to expand my creative practice while working as an Art Instructor at Modest Fly Art Studio. Teaching has become an integral part of my artistic identity, offering a reciprocal relationship between learning and instruction. Guiding students through

their own creative processes has deepened my appreciation for vulnerability, experimentation, and perseverance in art-making. It has also strengthened my ability to communicate complex

ideas clearly, adapt to different learning styles, and foster an inclusive and supportive creative

environment.

As an artist, I am very interested in creating public art for the city of Glendale. I believe this would be a valuable and meaningful experience for me. Public art has the power to bring people together, inspire creativity, and create lasting memories within a community. I enjoy developing new ideas that are memorable and engaging, and I would love the opportunity to share my creativity with the public. Creating art for Glendale would allow me to contribute positively to the city while growing as an artist and exploring new creative possibilities. My work could positively impact the community by creating art that is welcoming, meaningful, and visually engaging.

I am an artist who values creativity and thoughtful design. Recently, I have been working on projects that focus on developing original ideas while maintaining clean, neat, and well-organized work. I take responsibility seriously and always make sure my work is completed with care and attention to detail. Creativity is one of my strongest skills, and I enjoy finding new ways to express ideas through art. I would be a good fit for creating public art for Glendale because I am dedicated, reliable, and motivated to create artwork that is visually engaging and beneficial to the community.

My name is Angela Minasyan, and I am writing to express my interest in submitting a public art proposal for the City of Glendale. As an evolving artist at Modest Fly Art Studio, I am honored to be part of a collaborative team of dedicated female artists working together to design a meaningful mural for our local community. I see this project as more than a painting—it is an opportunity to bring culture, history, and beauty into a shared public space.

For the past five years, my work has focused on detailed acrylic paintings and custom commissions, including wearable art such as hand-painted sneakers. This experience has taught me precision, discipline, and how paint behaves on different surfaces—skills that directly translate to large-scale public art. Working on small, three-dimensional surfaces with no margin for error requires focus and control, and I bring that same level of care to work that will be seen by thousands.

My background in commission work has also strengthened my ability to collaborate, meet deadlines, and translate a client’s vision into a finished piece that feels intentional and complete. I understand that a mural is a service to the public, and that successful public art comes from listening—to the community, the space, and the city it belongs to.

What excites me most about this project is the opportunity to work as part of a collective. Our team brings together different artistic styles and perspectives, allowing the mural to reflect the diversity and character of Glendale rather than a single point of view. My goal is to help create a mural that residents feel proud of—one that adds warmth, identity, and inspiration to the city’s landscape. I would be honored to collaborate with the City of Glendale to create a lasting piece of public art for the community.
